Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a relaxing weekend full of resting!
Today’s topic is stretching.
I started stretching daily around 2 weeks ago because I wanted to be able to breathe more deeply during my breathing exercises and meditation, and it’s actually working! When I meditate after stretching, I’m able to take much deeper breaths and sit still, meaning without fidgeting, for a longer period of time (from less than 3ish minutes to now more than 7 minutes!). It also helps me wake up and get rid of the sluggish feeling I have every morning.
Here are the key facts:
- Stretching increases the blood flow in your entire body, which in turn wakes you up! Next time you’re craving caffeine and thinking about buying another Starbucks coffee, do some stretches first! Maybe you won’t even need that coffee after all!
- The increased blood flow will also promote cell growth and organ function. This leads to lower and more stable heart rate and blood pressure because your heart doesn’t have to work as hard!
- Stretching relieves muscle stiffness! If you’re constantly moving all day, bending forward, reaching up, walking, reaching low, etc., stretching can help reduce your body aches! My back pain has gone down immensely after I started stretching.
- Stretching reduces stress! It’s similar to breathing exercises, which we went over a few days ago! You’re loosening tight muscles and releasing tension. Less tension = more relaxed! #winning
*One thing to note about stretching is that if you stretch incorrectly or push yourself too hard, then you’ll likely injure yourself. Tomorrow’s post will be the Do’s and Don’ts’ of Stretching along with examples of actual stretches you can do!
